About Turkey

Turkey packs an unusual amount into one country: Roman ruins in better condition than most of Italy's, Ottoman mosques, a genuinely surreal volcanic landscape in Cappadocia, and a Mediterranean coastline. That range is exactly why it suits an escorted tour — the highlights are spread across a country the size of France, and the distances between them are the trip's main planning problem.

The classic circuit runs Istanbul → Cappadocia → Pamukkale → Ephesus, and eight to twelve days covers it comfortably. The important distinction when comparing tours is how you move between those stops: overnight coaches are cheaper and cost you a night's sleep, internal flights cost more and hand you back a day. Both appear on the cards above, and it is the single biggest difference between two otherwise identical itineraries.

Istanbul alone justifies two or three days — it is the only city in the world sitting on two continents, and the historic peninsula holds Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace within a short walk of each other.

Where these tours go

The cities that appear on almost every Turkey itinerary, and what you actually see in each.

Istanbul

Where every tour starts or ends. Byzantine and Ottoman capitals stacked on the same streets, split across Europe and Asia by the Bosphorus.

Cappadocia

The image that sells Turkey: hundreds of balloons at sunrise over eroded rock valleys and underground cities carved into soft volcanic stone.

Pamukkale

White mineral terraces of calcium-rich spring water, with a full Roman spa city on the hill directly above them.

Ephesus

One of the best-preserved classical cities anywhere — a genuine Roman street you walk down rather than look at from a rope line.

Antalya & the coast

Added on longer itineraries: the Mediterranean end of the trip, mixing beach time with ruins that happen to sit on the shoreline.

When to go

April–May and September–October are the sweet spot: warm, clear, and comfortable for the long walking days that Ephesus and Istanbul demand. July and August are hot — genuinely punishing inland at Pamukkale and Cappadocia — but best for the coast. Winter is cheapest and Istanbul stays rewarding, though Cappadocia balloon flights are frequently grounded by wind, so treat that one as a bonus rather than a guarantee.

TourRadar Most complete
by Travel Talk
🗓 12 days📍 Istanbul–Gallipoli–Troy–Ephesus–Pamukkale–Cappadocia👥 Group (max ~40)
★ 4.8(212 reviews)

The premium pick: London-based platinum operator, 4/5★ hotels, and the only itinerary here that adds Gallipoli and Troy — the most complete circuit if budget isn't the constraint.

An honest note: Skip a group tour if you only want Istanbul (very doable independently) or a beach week (that's a package holiday, not this page). An escorted circuit earns its keep on the long Anatolian distances — Cappadocia alone is a 730 km hop from Istanbul.

Turkey tour FAQ

How much does a Turkey tour cost from the UK? +

The escorted cultural circuits compared here run £440–1,480 excluding flights. Return London–Istanbul flights add £120–280. Most travellers spend £900–1,900 all-in for 8–12 days — roughly half the cost of an equivalent Italy or Greece tour.

What's the best month to visit Turkey? +

April–May and September–October: warm but not the 35–40°C of high summer in central Anatolia. If your dates touch Ramadan (Feb–Mar in 2026–27), tourist sites stay open — only local rhythms change.

Is the hot-air balloon ride in Cappadocia included? +

Almost never — it's a ~£150–200 optional extra on every tour here, weather-dependent and booked through the operator on the ground. Budget for it; it's worth it.

Do UK citizens need a visa for Turkey? +

No — UK passport holders can enter visa-free for tourist stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Passport must be valid 150 days beyond arrival.

How much walking is involved? +

Moderate — Ephesus and Cappadocia valley walks are 2–4 km on uneven ground, and Istanbul days are full. Any reasonable fitness level manages fine; pick a 'by plane' itinerary to cut the long coach legs.

Are flights from the UK included? +

No — tours start in Istanbul. That's usually cheaper for you: London–Istanbul is one of Europe's most competitive routes. 'By plane' tours DO include the internal Turkish flights.

Is Turkey safe for tourists? +

The tourist circuit (Istanbul, Cappadocia, the Aegean coast) has a long, solid safety record and the escorted format removes most practical worries. Check current FCDO advice before booking — it's the standard the operators themselves follow.
