About Japan

Japan rewards a guided trip more than most destinations. The sights are easy; the logistics are not. Rail passes, ryokan check-in etiquette, luggage forwarding between cities and a train network that runs on signage you may not read — an escorted tour absorbs all of it, which is why most first-timers book one rather than piecing the country together alone.

Nearly every itinerary follows the same spine, the so-called golden route: Tokyo in the east, Kyoto and Osaka in the Kansai region, and usually a stop at Hakone or Hiroshima. Nine to thirteen days covers it without rushing. Longer trips add Takayama and the Japanese Alps, Kanazawa, or the beaches and distinct culture of Okinawa.

The country is compact but dense. Shinkansen bullet trains put Tokyo and Kyoto just over two hours apart, so tours cover real distance without long travel days — you are typically in a new city every two or three nights, with the transfer taking a morning rather than a full day.

Where these tours go

The cities that appear on almost every Japan itinerary, and what you actually see in each.

Tokyo

The arrival point for almost every tour, and the modern counterweight to Kyoto's tradition. Most itineraries give it two to three nights at the start.

Kyoto

The old imperial capital and the reason most people come — over a thousand temples, plus the best-preserved historic streets in the country.

Osaka

Japan's kitchen and its most relaxed big city. Usually a one- or two-night stop, and the base for day trips to Nara's deer park.

Hakone & Mt Fuji

The classic overnight detour between Tokyo and Kyoto: hot springs, a lake cruise and — weather permitting — the mountain itself.

Hiroshima

Included on longer itineraries, usually as a sobering half-day plus the island shrine at Miyajima.

When to go

Spring (late March–April) for cherry blossom and autumn (late October–November) for foliage are the two peak seasons — the most beautiful, the most expensive, and the ones that sell out first, often six to nine months ahead. Summer is hot and humid with a June rainy season; winter is quiet and cheap, with excellent skiing and far fewer crowds at the temples.

13-Day Japan: Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Kyoto, Nara & Osaka

by The Dragon Trip
🗓 13 days📍 Tokyo–Fuji–Kyoto–Nara–Osaka–Hiroshima👥 Small group
★ 4.5(189 reviews)

The most ground covered per dollar on the full golden route, with Mount Fuji included — best per-day value of the longer itineraries.

An honest note: Skip a group tour if you've been to Japan before, speak basic Japanese, or genuinely enjoy planning logistics — Japan's rail network is superb and independent travel there is very doable. A tour buys you zero-hassle transfers and instant travel companions, not access.

Japan tour FAQ

How much does a Japan tour cost from Australia? +

Multi-day small-group tours in this comparison run roughly A$1,800–3,700 excluding flights. Return Sydney/Melbourne–Tokyo flights add A$800–1,400 depending on season. Most travellers spend A$3,500–5,500 all-in for 10–14 days.

Is $5,000 enough for a week in Japan? +

Yes — comfortably. A 7–9 day tour at ~A$2,400 plus flights (~A$1,100) and daily spending money (~A$80–120/day for meals not included and extras) lands around A$4,300–4,700.

What's the best month to visit Japan? +

Late March–early April (cherry blossom) and November (autumn colours) are the showpieces — and sell out 6–12 months ahead. May and October offer near-identical weather with fewer crowds and lower prices.

How much walking is involved on these tours? +

Expect 8,000–15,000 steps on sightseeing days — temples, markets and train stations involve real distances. The private Stunning Tours itineraries are the most adaptable if mobility is a concern.

Are flights included? +

No — none of the tours compared here include international flights. That's normal for Japan group tours and usually cheaper: you choose your own airline, dates and stopovers.

Do Australians need a visa for Japan? +

No visa is needed for tourist stays up to 90 days for Australian passport holders. You'll need a passport valid for the length of stay and an onward/return ticket.

When should I book a cherry-blossom tour? +

For late-March/April departures, book 8–12 months ahead — the best small-group tours for sakura season genuinely sell out. 2027 season departures typically open for booking from mid-2026.

I'm travelling solo — are these tours solo-friendly? +

Yes. Small-group tours skew 30–60% solo travellers. Most operators offer a twin-share option to avoid the single supplement; check each tour's dates & prices page for the exact policy.
